Confirmation of the authenticity of organic milk is an urgent problem in recent years due to the rapid development of the organic products market. The cattle diet, season, geographical and climatic characteristics of the region can effect on the fatty acid composition of organic and conventional milk. The aim of this work is analysis of the differences in fatty acid composition between organic and conventional milk for the confirmation of the authenticity of organic milk. It was shown that the content of C18:1t11, Conj C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 were higher in the conventional milk, and C18:3n3 ― in organic. This may indicate the decisive influence of the individual components of fodder on the content of each particular fatty acid. The ratio of Conj C18:2... |

Pferde erzielten gute Leistungen in Gemüsepflege. |

The world food and financial crises threaten to undermine the real incomes of urban consumers in eastern and southern Africa. This study investigates patterns in staple food prices, wage rates, and marketing margins for urban consumers in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia between 1993 and 2009. There is high correlation among wage rate series for various government and private sector categories. We find that average formal sector wages rose at a faster rate than retail maize meal and bread prices in urban Kenya and Zambia between the mid-1990s and 2007. Although the 2007/08 food price crisis partially reversed this trend, the quantities of staple foods affordable per daily wage in urban Kenya and Zambia during the 2008/09 marketing season were still... |

Butter contains vitamins, minerals and unsaturated lipids, such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs). However the oxidative stability and consequently the shelf-life of milk products are inversely correlated with their PUFA and CLA content. The objective of this study is the evaluation of the oxidative stability and sensory quality of PUFA/CLA-enriched butter versus conventional butter, with both types of butter being produced at ALP. For this purpose, new chemical and sensory-based methods will be developed, as well holistic complementary methods. This paper focuses on a preliminary study achieved using conventional butter, subjected to a long storage and to oxygen and light exposure, to develop a gas chromatography... |

In two experiments it was investigated which factors to what extent determine the fatty acid composition milk when cows are grazing high alpine pastures. The influences of altitude per se, of alpine forage quality, of concentrate-free diet type and of the overall grazing effect were separated by the experimental design. The most important factor which significantly elevated the concentrations of CLA, α-linolenic acid (ALA) and n-3 PUFA in milk fat was found to be the alpine diet type, i.e. the feeding of roughage-only (as well hay as pasture of as well lowland as alpine origin) with omission of concentrates and maize. Additionally a clear positive effect of the forage quality of alpine pastures on ALA concentration in milk fat was found. The latter effect... |

Temperature is a main climatic driver of plant phenology and the dominant abiotic factor directly affecting insect pests. Global warming is therefore expected to accelerate the development of plants and insects alike. In the case of multivoltine pest species, it was shown that higher temperatures lead to the appearance of additional generations toward the end of the warm season (Stöckli et al., 2012), which also has implications for pest management. The same effect was shown for the timing of flowering termination of apple trees (Stöckli and Samietz, 2015), the time when a pest can attack a fruit. In practice, however, much would depend on whether plant and pest phenology remain synchronized or not. Focusing on Switzerland, in this contribution we... |

Organic livestock farming is based on a low input production method, aiming to provide products of a high product and process quality rather than maximizing production. The production of a high meat quality corresponds to the expectations of consumers who are both seeking a premium product and who are willing to pay premium prices. This review focuses on the question of whether organic pork and beef production currently meet consumer demands, and it elaborates the potentials and limitations for producing high-quality meats under the current organic framework. Although defined by specific and basic guidelines, organic livestock production is characterised by largely heterogeneous farming conditions that allow for huge differences in the availability of... |

This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Any attempt to answer the question ‘is organic food better for you?’ requires an assessment of the safety, nutritional content and biological value aspects of food quality. Previous reviews have been unable to reach definitive conclusions after failing to ensure only valid comparisons are considered. When methodologically flawed studies are screened out and a complete assessment of nutritional quality is made, collectively, the available evidence supports the hypothesis that organically produced food is superior in terms of safety, nutritional content and nutritional value to that produced non-organically. More research is needed provide to more data further investigating the trends seen... |

This study aimed to gain insight into the microbial quality, safety and bacterial community composition of black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) reared at different facilities on a variety of organic waste streams. For seven rearing cycles, both on laboratory-scale and in large-scale facilities at several locations, the microbiota of the larvae was studied. Also samples of the substrate used and the residue (= leftover substrate after rearing, existing of non-consumed substrate, exuviae and faeces) were investigated. Depending on the sample, it was subjected to plate counting, Illumina Miseq sequencing and/or detection of specific food pathogens. The results revealed that the substrates applied at the various locations differed substantially in... |
